- Mobile Hydrogen Fuelling System
Air Liquide Canada Sacre-Davey Innovations successfully delivered a mobile hydrogen fuelling station to Air Liquide Canada. The station stores over 100 kg of gaseous hydrogen at 450 bar (6500 psig) and is capable of filling vehicles to 350 bar (5000 psig) pressure. The station also features on board gas boosters that allow boosting of pressure a) from a tube trailer to the vehicle, b) from a tube trailer to the station’s buffers and c) from station’s buffers to the vehicle. This BC Safety Authority and Transport Canada approved station can be readily towed to various sites in BC and setup in minimal time.
The station is presently stationed in Victoria, fuelling the first BC Transit fuel cell bus that is going through its trials.
- CO2 Storage & Injection System
Air Liquide Canada / CNQ or Canadian Natural Resources Limited SDE was contracted by Air Liquide Canada to analyze and design a CO2 storage and injection facility for the Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNQ) Horizon Oil Sands project in Fort McKay, Alberta. The system is capable of storing over 60,000 gallons of liquid CO2 and injecting variable flows of two phase CO2 into four tailings pipelines in order to control acidity levels and promote settlement in the downstream tailings ponds. Disciplines engaged were process, mechanical, electrical, civil and structural. Work involved process flow modeling, equipment selection and design of equipment skids, field piping, foundations and access roads.
- Refinery Modifications
Chevron, Burnaby Refinery SDE provided ongoing evaluation, and design for follow up to specific HAZOP items provided by the refinery. These include evaluation of the risks, definition of mitigation requirements, preliminary, and detailed engineering as necessary. This also involves miscellaneous equipment replacement and piping modifications to support equipment changes. Areas of work included: • FCC Alkylation • Crude • Splitter • Rheniformer • Offsites
- Dual Aviation Fuel Storage and Distribution
Alpha Aviation Ltd. Sacre-Davey performed the mechanical, electrical, and civil design work, and performed construction management for this dual aviation fuel storage and distribution facility. In accordance with new federal environmental standards for fuelling systems, the facility was designed with multiple fail-safes to prevent any egress of petroleum from the tank area. Aviation fuel is required to be of extremely high quality. Multiple testing and filtering stations were required to maintain the mandated standard. The system included wireless controllers to notify appropriate personnel at low fuel level or in the event of an emergency.
- Remote Location Emergency Power and Fuel Supply
Health Canada Health Canada contracted SDE on behalf of First Nations to provide mechanical, civil, and electrical design and construction management services to several remote British Columbia locations. The work involved the conversion of diesel-fuelled emergency generators to propane and natural gas systems. Strict new federal codes and standards on the design of liquid petroleum facilities made these propane and natural gas systems a clean and reliable alternative. Large capacity natural gas cylinders supply housing amenities such as sryers, stoves, hot water heaters, furnaces and emergency power generators. Maintenance guides and overall project reports were provided to the client to facilitate the year-to-year maintenance of the facility.
- Emergency Generator Fuel Supply and Storage
WSI-BLJC (Fraser Regional & Surrey Pre-Trial Facilities) Sacre-Davey was contacted to supply complete engineering design and construction management services for two emergency fuel supply and storage systems. The work included the removal of aging underground fuel oil storage tanks and installation of aboveground double-wall storage tanks, day tank, and all associated piping and electrical work.
- De-Gas Piping Project: Pine River Gas Plant & McMahon Gas Plant
Spectra Energy SDE provided detailed drawings for the liquid sulphur piping at Pine River Gas Plant. This included specification for the heated jacket piping and connections used in transferring liquid sulphur. Existing lines, insertion of a new seal pot, and overall drainage of the liquid sulphur were improved to address sealing and pressure issues. Temperature control and back pressure troubles were addressed by the new design and specification of a steam tracing system. The specification of eductors for a gas collection system was also provided for this project.
- Depropanizer Tower Replacement
Spectra Energy SDE supplied full scope engineering services and project management for the replacement of an existing Depropanizer tower. A new tower of equal diameter and new trays were integrated to increase capacity from 5500 to 10,000 Bpd. The project consisted of determining the new feed composition and simulating the operation of the tower with the new trays at the new feed rate, preparation of a tower drawing for bid and preparation of a bid package.
- Merox Unit Upgrade
Spectra Energy SDE designed the integration of several modifications that were necessary to enhance the operation of an existing UOP MeroxTM unit and improve performance by researching and reinforcing operating procedures, upgrading controls and re-routing an exhaust stream to a suitably sized incinerator.

- Pipeline Design Input and Stress Analysis – “T-South Project”
Westcoast Energy Inc. SDE provided design input and stress analysis services for 7 compressor stations along Westcoast’s mainline. The work involved installing an additional turbine compressor, aftercooler, and scrubber system, at both Westcoast’s CS7, and CS6 compressor stations. Operating pressures are 1450 PSIG, and the pipe diameter is 42”.
- Review of Natural Gas Pipeline - Texada Compressor Station
Westcoast Energy Inc. SDE provided design review, stress analysis and design input for a 1000 PSIG, 16” diameter pipeline located at Westcoast’s new Texada Compressor Station.
- Review of Natural Gas Pipeline - Kwoen Gas Plant
Westcoast Energy Inc. SDE provided design review, stress analysis and design input for a 1000 PSIG, 20” diameter pipeline servicing the new Kwoen Gas Plant in Northern BC. SDE’s input saved considerable cost and effort during the design phase by developing a file transfer protocol for importing the Westcoast’s 3-D pipe model directly into Caesar for analysis. The timely analysis of different variation of the proposed pipe routing also saved considerable costs at road crossings and equipment tie-in locations.
- Review of Natural Gas - Harmac Lateral
Centra Gas Inc. SDE provided a feasibility study to assess the impact of increasing line delivery from 20 MMCF to 60 MMCF at a minimum pressure of 1400 PSIG, with particular attention paid to the methane hydrate formation. The study indicated that under the proposed pipeline operating conditions the hydrate formation was a reality and strict operating procedures needed to be implemented to avoid these conditions. The study indicated the pressure/temperatures ranges for all the water contents foreseeable that will allow the pipeline to operate at the required capacity.
- Compressed Natural Gas Compressor and Re-circulation Skid
Westport Innovations Inc. SDE provided full EPCM services for the design, specification and installation of a new 5,000 PSIG, 4-stage CNG compressor system, storage bottles regulators and distribution network. The system was designed to provide Westport with high-pressure fuel (NG) for distribution, testing, re-capture, scrubbing and re-use. The skid enabled them to test their new fuel injector technology for durability at reduced costs.
- Natural Gas Pipeline Analysis for the Transmission Line to Vancouver Island
Centra Gas SDE carried out the modeling of the pipeline flow along the Transmission Line to Vancouver Island investigating the potential to increase pipeline capacity with the addition of two new compressor stations at Squamish and at Secret Cove. Using the geographical and pipeline data provided, we confirmed this option as a feasible method of increasing capacity. Modeling the system indicated that a flow capability of 188.t MMscf/d can be achieved using the design conditions provided. The primary focus was towards the pipeline performance and the flowing gas conditions, pressure and temperature. SDE assessed also the probability of hydrate formation and recommended realistic pipeline operating procedures as mitigating factors.
